More water discharged from Pune dams

first_imgWeekend showers in catchment areas have prompted another round of water discharge by the Irrigation Department from three of the four major dams supplying water to Pune district.More than 1,700 cusecs was released from Khadakwasla and Varasgaon each, while around 500 cusecs was discharged from Panshet into the Mutha River after all three dams filled to the brim on Monday, said Irrigation Department officials.According to authorities, the cumulative water stock in the four dams now stood at 28.68 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) of their combined capacity of 29.15 tmcft.“The present collective storage of 28.68 tmcft, which is 98.3% of the total capacity of the dams, is nearly 1tmc more than what it was at the same time last year (27.79 tmcft),” said an official. The catchment area of Khadakwasla dam, Pune city’s potable water lifeline, has recorded over 1000 mm rainfall this time, almost double than last year during this period.Authorities hope that with more showers expected in this month, the cumulative rainfall will help take care of the city’s ever-increasing water requirements for a year while addressing the irrigation needs of the outlying areas.Rains have also prompted discharge of waters from the Koyna dam in western Maharashtra, leading to a rise in the level of Panchganga river in Kolhapur district, which has yet to fully recover from the recent deluge. The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy showers for the next two days in the ghat areas of the State, especially in Nashik (north Maharashtra) and Pune, Satara and Kolhapur in the western part, all of which have been battered by incessant rain and heavy floods recently. The Kolhapur Irrigation Department officials said the fresh showers had led to a discharge of a little over 24,000 cusecs from Koyna dam throughout Monday while the Almatti dam in Karnataka was discharging around 14,900 cusecs.last_img read more

AUSSIE MENS 30’S NIGHT OUT WITH THE STARS

first_imgAs many would already be aware, the 2006 Australian Sport Awards were held last Wednesday night, February 22nd, as Darling Harbour in Sydney. The Australian Mens 30’s Touch side was invited to attend the black tie event as a finalist in the ‘Masters Team of the Year’ award, after their stellar performance in claiming the 2005 All Nations Championships.  The afternoon began with team manager Mark Collins and Captain Phil Jarrett collecting Assistant Coach Charlie Borg from Sydney Airport, before meeting Coach David Collins at the Crown Plaza for some quick drinks to calm any nerves. After meeting team members Graham Knights, Kenny Nagas, Jason Yess, Tony Eltakchi and Scott Danswan, the team headed over to the Convention Centre feeling the excitement and anticipation of the night that lay ahead.Led to their table, the team walked past lights, camera and microphones, while walking shoulder to shoulder with sporting stars including Dawn Fraser, Liesel Jones, Paul Roos, Brad Kirk, Anthony Minichello and Brian Goorjian, just to name a few.The reality of what it meant to be named as one of three finalists in their division was beginning to hit home. With their category being the first award of the evening, the side did not have to wait long before they knew the result. Unfortunately, it was not to be, with the Australian Mens Over 55’s Athletics relay team taking out the award. The team had won two gold medals at the recent World Championships in Spain. The disappointment was keenly felt, as the team knew they had achieved fantastic results in New Zealand and were obviously competitive players hoping to win the award. But again, honoured to be named as a finalist, the team relaxed and sat back and enjoyed the rest of the evening together. When the awards were over the Aussie Mens 30’s made the most of their position, taking the opportunity to chat to and get some photos with a few of Australia’s sporting celebrities. After hearing Coach David Collins comment of much he admired and respected Sydney Kings and Australian Boomers coach Brian Goorjian, team member Kenny Nagas sought out the coach and asked him to come and chat to David Collins.David and Brian not only chatted in depth, but exchanged phone numbers, planning to attend each other’s training sessions, which for David was a great thrill indeed. The side then partied their night away, celebrating a great evening and their team’s success. They would like to thank everyone involved in the Touch community for the support and well wishes they received before the awards ceremony.last_img read more

10 People In Sports Media Who Lost Their Jobs For Controversial Comments

first_imgProvocateurs have proven to be very valuable in the current sports media landscape. Years ago, ESPN caught lightning in a bottle with shows like Pardon The Interruption and Around the Horn, the new next step in that direction, First Take, is basically the model for how rival FOX Sports 1, which is hiring away longtime co-host Skip Bayless, is building its daily programming. A show like First Take relies on big news-making declarations, and opinions that will get people riled up. Sometimes, on live television or a fast-paced medium like Twitter, personalities cross the line, and are punished. The most recent example is Emily Austen, a Tampa Bay Rays and Orlando Magic sideline reporter for FOX Sports Florida who will no longer be appearing on the network due to racist statements she made on a Barstool Sports Facebook Live show. She is far from the only sports personality to be given the axe for things they’ve said.In 2016, I made a bad decision and my life took an unexpected turn. Now, I’m passionate about helping others avoid making a similar mistake. pic.twitter.com/BlRsOAZFYR— Emily Austen (@emilyausten_) March 14, 2017Here are 10 of the most notorious examples of people in sports media who have been fired for the things they’ve said.Next: Get Started With Emily Austen >>>Pages: Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Page 7 Page 8 Page 9 Page 10 Page 11last_img read more

Province proposes to enact wolf cull in order to restore caribou population

first_img“The objective of this wolf reduction program is to reverse caribou population decline in the Tweedsmuir-Entiako, Hart Ranges, and Itcha-Ilgachuz herds. To reverse caribou population declines, high rates of wolf removal (>80%) must be achieved.”Robert Serrouya, director of the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute’s Caribou Monitoring Unit says several herds in B.C. have already turned around because of this multi-pronged approach. It is reported that a 30-day consultation with Indigenous communities and “targeted stakeholders” is underway in regards to the proposed wolf cull. FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Province of British Columbia is proposing to enact a predator cull to reduce the wolf population in central parts of the Province. As reported by the Vancouver Sun, the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development says the cull would kill more than 80 percent of the wolf population in parts of central B.C. where herds are threatened.Darcy Peel, director of the B.C. Korean Massage Centers Invading Morocco

first_imgCasablanca- Korean massage centers are increasingly flourishing in Morocco. But despite their claims of being centers that provide medical massage to their clients, most of these centers provide services without any legal authorization from the government. A report prepared by newspaper Annass, published on Wednesday, shed light on this new phenomenon. The report was set behind the scenes of some of these Korean massage centers, which also apparently claim to offer their clients theoretical classes on wellbeing and relaxation methods. According to Annass’s report, these centers are omnipresent, especially in areas with high population density. In Casablanca for instance, the kingdom’s largest city and economic capital, it is particularly in the areas of Hay Mohammedi and Sidi Maarouf that these centers are mostly found.  They employ girls from various backgrounds, dressed in white gowns, whose job is to lure potential customers passing by these centers by suggesting a free massage, or purchases of products with reduced prices. Even on the net, Korean massage is presented as one of the most original and modern methods of relaxation. They mainly claim that their methods do not rely on pressure or on digital stimulation of energy points, but rather on generating carefully measured vibrations.  These attractive promises appeal to people mainly suffering from back pain, insomnia and anxiety. But it turns out, according to the same source that most of these centers that claim to be supervised by professional physicians seek only one thing: luring the maximum number of customers to sell them their services. Relaxation from fatigues and stress via a massage proves to offer great but eventually temporary results. © Morocco World News. All Rights Reserved.
