Mild flu virus found in Illinois ducks

first_img In other avian flu news, the Chinese agriculture ministry late last week announced a new outbreak of H5N1 flu among chickens in northern China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported yesterday. The H5N1 outbreak killed 985 chickens in Xincheng village in Baotou City, and 8,990 chickens were culled to control the spread of the disease, the Xinhua report said. Mild strains include the “North American” H5N1, which is different from the lethal H5N1 virus strains circulating in Asia, Europe, and Africa. However, low-pathogenic strains sometimes mutate into high-pathogenic forms. Viruses containing H5 and N1 surface proteins (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase) were found in samples from healthy migratory green-winged teals in Fulton County in west-central Illinois, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of the Interior said in a news release. Green-winged teals are commonly hunted, but there is no known health risk to hunters or hunting dogs from contact with low-pathogenic avian flu viruses, federal officials said. China’s last poultry outbreak was in August, among 1,805 ducks in Changsha, the capitol of Hunan province. According to Xinhua, China has reported nine avian flu outbreaks this year. Oct 2, 2006 (CIDRAP News) – Initial tests on wild ducks in Illinois suggest they have a low-pathogenic strain of avian influenza, not the deadly H5N1 strain, federal officials said late last week. Of 11 samples obtained from the ducks, five were positive for H5 and were sent to the USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, for confirmation. One of the five samples tested positive for both the H5 and N1 components. Low-pathogenic avian influenza is common in wild birds and can be found in many duck populations, including green-winged teal. Low-pathogenic strains typically cause minor sickness or no noticeable symptoms. See also: Further testing at the NVSL will clarify if one or more of the virus strains are present, identify a specific subtype, and determine the pathogenicity, officials said. Results are expected in 2 to 3 weeks. “However, this does not mean these ducks are infected with an H5N1 strain. It is possible that there could be two separate avian influenza viruses,” the federal agencies said. Since the USDA and DOI announced the expanded wild-bird monitoring program in early August, low-pathogenic H5N1 has been confirmed in Michigan, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Tests are pending on samples from pintail ducks in Montana, though initial results suggested a mild avian flu strain. The samples were collected Sep 24 in the Rice Lake Conservation area as part of an expanded wild bird monitoring program involving the USDA and the lower 48 states. The World Cup winner joined United’s academy from Le Havre in 2009 having grown up dreaming of representing the north London club who, under the management of Arsene Wenger, boasted some of the best French players to have ever played in the Premier League.Appearing on the UTD podcast, Pogba admitted: ‘I had posters of Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Zidane, Thierry Henry, Djibril Cisse, Kaka. ‘Yeah, so I will be honest I was an Arsenal fan, obviously because of all the French players. My other brother was a Man Utd fan and couldn’t say anything. AdvertisementAdvertisementADVERTISEMENT‘I used to really love Thierry Henry so I would say because of him I was an Arsenal fan. Then I changed then I went to choose to stay with my other brother who was a United fan.’ Paul Pogba has been restricted to just eight appearances this season due to an ankle injury, one of which came against Arsenal (Picture: Getty)Asked to expand on his admiration for Henry, Pogba revealed he began his fledgling career as a forward, before he was instructed to move into a midfield role he has starred for United, Juventus and the France national team.He added: ‘I started as a striker then No.10 then No.6. Thank God they didn’t make me a centre back. I wanted to touch the ball so much. ‘I was a striker and I was dribbling too much. One coach told me play No.10 so you can touch the ball more. I took still too many touches so he put me No.6.’ Pogba has been linked with a summer move and a potential return to Juventus, while Real Madrid maintain a long-standing interest in the 27-year-old.More: Manchester United FCRio Ferdinand urges Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to drop Manchester United starNew Manchester United signing Facundo Pellistri responds to Edinson Cavani praiseEx-Man Utd coach blasts Ed Woodward for two key transfer errorsThe United midfielder has, however, been out of action since Boxing Day following an ankle injury which required surgery, but Pogba his hopeful of mounting an imminent comeback once domestic football is back on the agenda. SportCaller strengthens William Hill alliance with Golden Race

first_imgShare SportCaller teams up with Coral for Racing Super Series launch August 12, 2020 Ahead of this year’s Cheltenham Festival, free-to-play (FTP) sports-game specialist SportCaller has extended its alliance with William Hill to launch its new Golden Race. The launch of the new game is intended to enhance player-engagement with the bookmaker’s audience. Players can compete for a jackpot prize of up to £1m by trying to predict the outcome of a given number of runners in the featured race each day across the Cheltenham Festival.Liam Wallwork, Commercial Director at William Hill, commented: “Having successfully showcased the potential of FTP with our popular Lucky 7 racing game, we were keen to recruit SportCaller’s services again for Cheltenham, a tentpole event for us where client retention is invariably at a premium.“SportCaller have again delivered on a refreshing new FTP which has already proved a boon for player engagement. Jackpot games have to be winnable, otherwise our clients won’t trust or play them. So, we were thrilled to see so many enjoy the Midas touch at Kempton’s Golden Race on Wednesday. “The game will now be the cornerstone of our marketing and advertising campaign for The Festival and beyond. In fact, we will be running the £1m Golden Race in tandem across the meeting alongside Lucky 7 for 100k-a-day. It’s by far the most generous FTP offering in the village.”Golden Race has been adapted by SportCaller to improve retention levels across all operator platforms, as well as boosting the customer-experience during the Festival, which has traditionally shown to result in a huge pull on annual targets. The game has since been integrated into the William Hill account architecture, and can be accessed via a centralised sign-in function on the iPhone app. SportCaller Managing Director Cillian Barry added: “Having originated the first free-to-play jackpot game with Channel 4 Racing way back in 2014, it’s great to return to our first love ahead of Cheltenham with the next generation in horse racing FTP.“It’s a real validation for Hills, a name so intrinsically connected with horse racing and The Festival, to have enlisted our services and we can’t wait for Golden Race to come under starter’s orders next week and for one, or more, lucky punters to bag the £1m daily jackpot!”In order to play the game, entrants must place a £10 qualifying bet (or £5 each-way) on any UK/IRE race that same day, which then entitles the player to then participate in the Golden Race for the jaw-dropping £1m, or a consolation prize of £50,000 for forecasting the first two finishers home, if the jackpot isn’t won. HARPS HOPE TO SHAKE OFF LOSING STREAK AGAINST WATERFORD

first_imgLeague of Ireland football returns on Friday night after the mid-season break and Finn Harps will be hoping for a change in fortunes as they make the long trip to the RSC to face Waterford United (kick-off 7.45pm).Sean McCarron will play up front for HarpsHarps went into the break on the back of a three game losing streak in the league and team boss Peter Hutton feels the break may just have come at the right time for his troops.“Given the nature of the last few performances, then yes I think the break came at the right time. Mentally I think a few of the players needed a break whilst a few had knocks or injuries that the rest will certainly have helped. The short break will, we hope, have helped in allowing the group to take stock and refocus now for the second half of the season,” said Hutton. Harps’ last outing two weeks ago came against bottom of the table Salthill Devon who recorded their first home victory of the season courtesy of a 2-1 victory.“It was a very disappointing result”, said Hutton of the defeat in Drom. “We have actually played worse and won this season but unfortunately if you don’t take your chances then you will get punished and that’s exactly what happened.“We had enough chances to win two or three games but didn’t convert them and then conceded from a penalty that set us back. We got ourselves back on track with ten minutes to go but again shot ourselves in the foot by some sloppy defending allowing them to sneak a winner in the final minutes.”The defeat in Salthill was Harps’ third in a row in the league with losses in Wexford (2-1) and at home to Athlone Town (3-2) preceding the game in Galway. In the Wexford and Athlone games, Harps actually took the lead (twice against Athlone) but still ended up losing, while the game in Salthill saw Harps fight back to level but still lost the game. Prior to that, Harps had only lost twice all season. “The 3 games we’ve lost have been difficult to stomach as we have been the architects of our own downfall,” said Hutton. “Those games in question it has been our own decision making or lack of making the right decisions in certain situations has cost us, not the quality of the opposition, so in that regard it has been very frustrating. To have led in two of the games then get nothing from it has been difficult but we need to learn and quickly.”Another difficult game awaits on Friday night against a Waterford side who have already beaten Harps at Finn Park this season.“Waterford are starting to build a bit of momentum and the players are basically playing for the careers with the arrival of a new manager imminent,” said Hutton of Friday’s trip to the south-east.“They have improved of late and have already made three new signings with more to come so they are going to prove a difficult opponent no doubt.”Harps have a decent record at the RSC in recent seasons and are unbeaten in their last four trips to Waterford. The opening day meeting of the two sides at the same venue finished in a 1-1 draw, with Sean McCarron grabbing a last minute equaliser for Harps. Tommy Bonner will sit out Friday’s game through suspension, while Gary Merritt is only returning to full health after a bout of flu. Knicks Shoot Past Suns, 128-97

first_imgPHOENIX — Sasha Vujacic made the most of a rare opportunity to start and play big minutes. The veteran guard scored a season-high 23 points and knocked down a career high-tying 6 of 7 3-pointers to help the New York Knicks blow out the Phoenix Suns 128-97 on March 9.“I just got into a game rhythm early. We played the right way. We were swinging the ball, we played as a team on both ends of the court. That helped everybody to have a good game,” Vujacic said.Vujacic made his first start since last November and logged a season-high 33 minutes after not playing at all in two of the Knicks’ last three games. Carmelo Anthony added 23 points for New York.“For somebody who has sat and not played as long as Sasha had and come out and make a contribution he did at both ends of the court,” Knicks interim coach Kurt Rambis said, “he really helped establish our outside shooting game as well. I was happy for him.”The Knicks hit a season-high 16 3s and achieved their highest point total and largest margin of victory in a game this season. Derrick Williams scored 18 points and Jose Calderon added 10 points and 12 assists.“We got good scoring opportunities, good open shots and guys were willing to move the basketball,” Rambis added. “Guys got open shots and their feet were set and nice rhythm shots, and that always helps the ball go in.”Rookie Devin Booker led Phoenix with 32 points. Tyson Chandler’s nine rebounds gave the veteran center 9,005 for his career, making him the 50th player in NBA history to reach that milestone. The Suns tried to mount a comeback in the third quarter and trimmed a 20-point halftime deficit to 13 on a jumper by Alex Len with 3:35 to go. But Anthony responded with his third 3-pointer of the game to make the score 83-67, and the Suns never got closer than 13 points in the second half.“They made some big shots all night to kill our runs and we didn’t have an answer for them,” Suns guard Ronnie Price said. The Knicks opened a 54-28 advantage in the first half. Former Suns center Robin Lopez blocked a shot at one end, then put in a hook shot at the other during their run that broke open the game.Anthony scored 12 points in the second quarter and made 8 of 10 shots in the first half. New York led by as many as 36 points, which was the Knicks’ largest lead at any point in a game this season.“We didn’t have it today,” Booker said. “They were getting wide-open shots. It was target practice. Anybody in the NBA can make those.”Newly-signed Chase Budinger scored two points in his Suns debut.(JOSE M. ROMERO)TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more
