U.S. computer makers lose markets as more NSA spyware exposed

first_imgKaspersky Lab, a well-regarded, Russian-based, computer security company, released a report in mid-February describing a U.S. National Security Agency secret spyware program that lets the U.S. government read all the data on computers’ hard drives. At the same time, the Chinese government has been demanding that U.S. software companies provide them with the encryption keys to read the data files that their software produces.  This would allow China to more effectively fight terrorist groups, but it would also allow the government to detect bribery and corruption, which are central to imperialist domination around the globe. When the U.S. government, on behalf of the Silicon Valley technology industry, objected to China’s demands, the Chinese government pointed to the sheer  hypocrisy of the U.S. position — particularly referring to the scope of NSA spyware activities. The Kaspersky report reveals just how insidious is the NSA’s new family of malware.  The report calls it “The Equation Family” and states that it “surpasses anything else” the company’s staff has ever seen. (“How the NSA’s Firmware Hacking Works and Why It’s So Unsettling,” wired.com, Feb. 23)This hacking tool actually places spyware code in a computer hard drive’s “firmware.” That means that existing anti-virus programs cannot get rid of it.Even if the user reformats the hard drive and removes all the data, this spyware is untouched. It will hack any new data placed on the hard drive. The “Equation” malware can even store data, including passwords, before they are encrypted.  So, even if the user purchases special software that converts the data into an unreadable format, the NSA spyware can hide the readable files on some “hidden” area of the hard drive.Even if the infected computer is never attached to the Internet, the NSA can still retrieve these hidden files when the computer is brought through customs, such as at an airport or border checkpoint, or if it is stolen. Most of the infected computers that Kaspersky found were in Iran.  But the company also found infected computers in Belgium, Germany, Britain, Russia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan, Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories.  Moreover, others were found in the U.S. — particularly among those used by Muslim activists and religious organizations.  (“Researchers Find ‘Astonishing’ Malware Linked to NSA Spying,” firstlook.org, Feb. 17)The latest revelations about NSA spyware add to those already made by whistleblower Edward Snowden. They have deservedly hurt global sales of U.S. computers and software.Forrester Research pegs potential losses at $180 billion, especially affecting technology firms and managed service providers. “Suspicion of U.S. vendors is running at an all-time high,” says Andrew Jaquith, chief technology officer at the cloud-security firm SilverSky. (“NSA surveillance hurting tech firms’ business,” usatoday.com, Feb. 28, 2014)Sales of computers and other equipment to China have been sharply affected.  It illustrates the fact that ruthless imperialist strategies meant to advance the interests of U.S. big business can blow back to harm some of them.On the one hand, U.S. corporations and banks hunger for huge profits from exploiting Chinese labor and from selling products, like computers, to the Chinese people.  On the other hand, the imperialists’ main goal has always been to destroy the socialist foundations of the People’s Republic of China — to undermine the planned economy and to install a regime subservient to Wall Street’s will.Bribery and corruption are tools the imperialists use to carry out their goals in China.  Refusing China’s demands for the encryption keys allows the U.S. to shield its personnel and collaborators from China’s anti-corruption efforts, but at the same time it undermines the sales of U.S. computers to Chinese people. The NSA provides no “security” for the workers and poor, either in the U.S. or abroad.  Its sole mission is to protect the banks and corporations that feast off the poverty and misery of the world’s people. Only socialism, a system that places people before profits, can harness this technology to serve the interests of the workers and oppressed.FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thisFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thislast_img read more

Roaches Still Sickening

first_imgRemember when you spray that roaches like crevices. They prefer for their backs andlegs to touch the surface at the same time. “Roaches have survived for more than 300 million years,” said Paul Guillebeau, anentomologist with the University of Georgia Extension Service. “They have changedvery little, according to fossil evidence.” Cockroaches need three things to form a population: food, moisture and shelter. “They’re very effective, so you may not need to use as many pesticides as we oncedid,” Guillebeau said. “However, if you already have a large roach population, you’llprobably have to spray some kind of pesticide.” They range from about a half-inch for German cockroaches to two inches for smokeybrown adults. Recent reports that cities like Los Angeles, New York, Miami and Atlanta have roachproblems don’t surprise many. Roaches are an age-old problem, and they don’t seem tobe going away. “You usually find larger populations in cities,” he said, “due to the number ofapartment buildings. And the climate has some effect.” “Some roaches come in from outdoors, like smokey browns, and they like warmclimates,” Guillebeau said. “Others like German cockroaches live almost exclusivelyindoors, and the outdoor climate doesn’t matter to them.” “Be scrupulously clean,” Guillebeau said. “Even a crumb is a feast for a cockroach.” So how do you keep a population of roaches from taking over your home?center_img A study by Combat Insect Control Systems ranked Atlanta as the 12th mostcockroach-infested city in the nation. Los Angeles topped the list. The study was basedon 1996 sales of roach control products. He also warns you to quickly fix leaks in the kitchen or bath, because even smallamounts of water will attract roaches. “Apartment buildings usually provide all of these,” he said. “Once a few getestablished, it doesn’t take long for a huge population to form.” He recommends cleaning the kitchen every night and putting away all food, includingpet food. “Roaches like pet food as much as your pet does,” he said. Some factors out of your control, such as climate, attract roaches, too. To help get rid of roach populations, some new roach baits are now on the market. Roaches come in more than 3,500 varieties. But you can tell most from other bugs bytheir flat, long, tinny, oval-shaped, brown bodies. The adults typically have wings. “The most common varieties in the United Sates are the German, brown-banded,American, Oriental and smokey brown cockroaches,” Guillebeau said.last_img read more

VoIP Over 3G Comes to the iPhone – And Maybe Even the iPad

first_imgTags:#NYT#voice#web 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market See also: ReadWriteWeb’s complete coverage and analysis of the iPad on our iPad topic page. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Yesterday’s iPad launch continues to dominate the tech news today. Besides announcing the iPad, however, Apple also quietly announced a major change to its iPhone policies yesterday: Apple now allows developers to use a 3G connection to make VoIP calls. The first application to make use of this is iCall (iTunes link), but chances are that Skype, Truphone and other VoIP providers are already working on updated iPhone apps as well. Until now, Apple’s iPhone SDK prohibited developers from developing VoIP-enabled apps that used the carrier’s 3G network. Developers who wanted to use VoIP in their apps had to restrict themselves to using this feature over Wi-Fi connections only. This restriction was purely Apple’s decision. AT&T had already lifted its own ban on VoIP apps over 3G last October. Back then, Skype’s CEO, Josh Silverman, praised AT&T for this move and called it “the right step for AT&T, Apple, millions of mobile Skype users and the Internet itself.”In our own tests, the iCall application worked just like advertised, though we did experience some lag and the application wasn’t 100% stable.VoIP and the iPad?While the iPad won’t have any built-in telephony apps, some versions of the device will come with optional 3G connectivity. Thanks to today’s change in Apple’s iPhone SDK policies, the iPad – which features a built-in microphone – now has the potential to work as a VoIP phone as well. We still have to wait and see if Apple will allow this, however. Armed forces propose both reduction in age, more posts to attract talent

Their punchline: “Be a winner for life”.This winning image projection coincides with a proposal for a major restructuring of the army that is aimed at lowering the age profile at the critical command level – company, battalion and brigade – and increasing the number of posts at senior levels.Besides giving the forces a younger look, the move is expected to plug the officer shortfall, currently calculated at a debilitating 12,554 or around 30 per cent in the army alone. After a series of intensive inter-service deliberations, the armed forces have submitted a proposal for “assured career progression” to the Ministry of Defence. Special Secretary Ajai Vikram Singh examined the proposals ahead of the final report’s submission to the ministry on July 31. Once cleared, the report will be forwarded to the Ministry of Finance for expenditure approval and, finally, come up before the Cabinet. However, there are indications that the armed forces may have to fight tooth and nail for the Defence Ministry’s approval. In a July 26 meeting with representatives from the three services, Singh apparently made it clear that he was not in favour of creating additional posts that would render the services top heavy. The special secretary, who takes over as revenue secretary on August 1, bluntly declared that the restructuring would have to be done through upgradation of posts within the existing strength. The need to revamp the armed forces was felt after the military establishment complained of stepmotherly treatment meted out to its officers in comparison to their IAS and IPS counterparts. While the administrative and police cadre reach the rank of joint secretary (equivalent to a major-general in the army) after 18-19 years of service, the army officers can at best become colonels after 20-21 years in uniform.advertisementOnly around 3 per cent of the 40,000 officers reaches the rank of lieutenant-generals and only seven make it to the rank of commander-in-chief. This has led to operational problems. The average age of a battalion commander is 40 years and that of a brigade commander close to 50. The dictum that an officer must be fitter than the men he commands is difficult to implement in the Indian forces.Such poor career prospects is the main reason why the armed forces are not attracting the talent required to cater to the technologically oriented security needs. Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal S. Krishnaswamy believes there is an urgent need to revamp the cadre management in the armed forces on the basis of merit and field experience. “The average age profile of the field commanders must be brought down to make the force more efficient,” he told INDIA TODAY.The Indian Air Force has suggested that the average age of a wing commander should come down from 39 to 35 years, that of a group captain from 41 to 36 and of an air commodore from 50 to 45 years. Although the air force has sought additional posts at the group-captain level, it is keen that merit and not seniority be the criterion for promotion.Krishnaswamy has already directed that all promotions from wing-commander level onward should be based only on merit, specially field experience. The air force has decided to amalgamate certain non-flying branches into the administration section so that all officers have a chance to make it to the air-marshal level. The army and the navy are on a similar mission. Army Headquarters – has suggested that the restructuring should allow a cadet joining the National Defence Academy at the age of 19 years to go on to become an army commander. Those joining the services at the age of 20, 21, 22 and 23 years should have the chance to retire as lieutenant-general, major-general, brigadier and colonel.”The assured career progression should be such that 95 per cent of the officers can make it to the rank of a colonel,” says a general. Currently, only 240 officers from a batch of 600, that is 40 per cent, get promoted to the rank of a colonel every year. The Defence Ministry is in favour of faster promotions but is not keen on creating additional posts. To remove stagnation at the senior levels, the army has proposed 1,254 brigadier-level posts, up from the existing 886 posts, 647 major-general-level posts against the current 334 and 164 lieutenant-general posts instead of the 61 at present. It has also recommended the creation of a new rank of colonel-general between lieutenant-general and general. The army has proposed that seven commanders and nine principal staff officers-like master-general ordnance and adjutant-general at Army Headquarters- should be called colonel-general so that parity is maintained with the police and paramilitary forces in an internal security situation. The new rank will correct the imbalance that had occurred after the posts of director-general (DGs), special DG and additional DG were created in the police.advertisementThe Indian Army has only 61 officers of lieutenant-general rank, while Uttar Pradesh alone reportedly has 48 officers at that level. “The proliferation of DG posts has led to a situation where the police virtually do not obey army commanders called in to tackle internal security problems,” says Lt-General Vinay Shankar, former DG, Artillery. The new rank of colonel-general, however, does not have many takers in South Block and even at Army Headquarters. Instead, the Defence Ministry has sought the advice of the Personnel Ministry on whether lieutenant-generals who could not make it to the commander rank due to the “residual age” factor, could be given the pay and facilities of a commander-in-chief.In June this year, there were 12 lieutenant-generals who had been superseded, as they had less than two years left in service. The Defence Ministry, which initially rejected this proposal of the Chiefs of Staff Committee chairman, now seems more inclined to create seven ex-cadre ranks at the army commander-level to accommodate some of those who missed the boat. The Indian Navy, on its part, has proposed that 432 posts of lieutenant- commander be upgraded to commander level to ensure faster promotions in the service. However, a proposal to create a new rank of rear admiral (junior grade) in place of the existing commodore rank was shot down by Naval Headquarters. While the Defence Ministry may agree to upgrade posts at the critical command level, it is unlikely to create a large number of additional posts because of the financial implications. South Block is all for making an officer of the armed forces “a winner for life” but that will have to be done by restructuring the present strength and not by adding new posts.last_img read more

first_imgAbout the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say Scotland coach Clarke raps fans barracking Liverpool fullback Robertsonby Paul Vegas17 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveScotland coach Steve Clarke has hit back at the Tartan Army barracking Liverpool fullback Andrew Robertson. For the defeats against Russia and Belgium, Robertson received the brunt of the criticism levelled at the squad.”Listen, when you don’t win matches you are going to be crucified,” Clarke told The Scotsman.”Andy is experienced enough to realise that. He is the captain and the one who gets it. But it is unfair. It’s unfair to single out Andy Robertson and say that he should take the criticism.”Everyone should take the criticism. It’s a collective thing. I have spoken to Andy since, we had a good chat and he is fine.”Robertson is not the first Scottish Liverpool player to be questioned for his performances at international level. Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen were both subjected to the same treatment.”There is always going to be certain criticism – Alan Hansen wasn’t good enough to play for Scotland either,” Clarke bemoaned.”The best way to avoid the criticism is to get points, to win matches and draw matches you are expected to lose. That just makes everyone feel a little bit better.”It’s the same in club football. Winning covers a multitude of sins. If you start to win matches everyone will be on board and more positive about it. They will stop talking about the players who are not selected and instead speak about the ones who are.” last_img read more

Indiana Basketball Fans Have Launched TomCreanBuyout.com

first_imgWebsite devoted to Tom Crean's buyout.Tom Crean has put together a very talented Hoosiers roster, but many fans aren’t thrilled with the results. Crean took over a program that was hit hard by NCAA violations under head coach Kelvin Sampson, and went 28-66 in his first three years in Bloomington, before leading IU back to the NCAA Tournament in 2011-12 and 2012-13, when it reached back to back Sweet Sixteens. Crean’s program was a disappointing 17-15 last season, and is 19-11 this season, and right on the cusp of the NCAA Tournament. We’ve seen unhappy fans launch websites calling for coaches’ jobs before, but the unhappy Indiana fans have taken a bit of a different approach. Someone has launched www.tomcreanbuyout.com, which provides information on the cost to buyout Crean’s large contract. http://www.tomcreanbuyout.com/http://www.tomcreanbuyout.com/Indiana is set to bring back most of its roster next year, barring possible NBA Draft departures, and stand a solid shot at making this year’s NCAA Tournament. We expect Crean to be back, but it is certainly understandable why Hoosier fans’ patience is running short.last_img read more
