Nadim Nassar, a Syrian-born Church of England priest, launched the Awareness Foundation in 2003 in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The foundation aims to combat ignorance, misunderstandings and to change people’s preconceived notions about the world’s religions.The foundation runs regular courses, workshops and offers a training program for future course leaders. Fr. Nadim works closely with other faith leaders and scholars who are committed to breaking down social barriers and educating about peaceful coexistence.The foundation operates a U.S. branch, with a coordinator based at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on K Street in Washington, D.C.Each year, the foundation runs the Awareness Sunday initiative, which calls people of all faiths to make a new commitment to fostering peace through education and building bridges. Last year, Awareness Sunday was marked in 22 countries.Supported by many of the world’s faith leaders, Awareness Sunday will be observed this year on Sept. 16.
