Move shows legal shenanigans of PPP – State Minister

first_imgMinister of State Joseph Harmon issued scathing criticisms against the Opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) for its move to file private criminal charges against two Government Ministers, claiming that Thursday’s move will make “a mockery” of the legal system. The Guyana Police Force’s Special OrganisedMinister of State, Joseph HarmonCrime Unit (SOCU) instituted charges against former Finance Minister, Dr Ashni Singh and former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Industrial and Commercial Investment Limited (NICIL), Winston Brassington for misconduct in public office under the PPP’s Administration. Likewise, the PPP filed charges against the coalition Government’s former Public Health Minister, Dr George Norton and current Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence for similar charges. However, Minister Harmon feels that the Opposition’s move is a “clear attempt” to draw attention away from the malfeasance charges, calling the move “cowardly” sordid record of corruption while in office, further claiming that the party had a “sordid record of corruption while in office.”“The PPP is aware that more charges are soon to be filed against high public officials who served under the Jagdeo and Ramotar Administrations. These charges are a result of months of intense investiga, tion by Commissions of Inquiries and evidence gathered by SOCU. The PPP is aware that investigations have revealed that during its tenure the nation was losing billions of dollars each year through procurement fraud and other corrupt activities by senior public officials,” the statement attributed to Harmon observed. He said his Government will continue to take the necessary steps to ensure that those who held public office and engaged in malfeasance while in office are brought to justice. Harmon is adamant that the actions of the Ministers will be vindicated.last_img read more

Grant application will delay upgrades to City water park

first_imgIn a news release Friday, the City of Fort St. John said new grant application to upgrade the Fort St. John spray park will delay construction until 2016.  The City had originally budgeted to refurbish the 13 year-old park in 2015 and spend $320,000.As we told you earlier this week, Council approved the staff recommendation to apply for the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program for funding to improve the Spray Park in Centennial Park.  If the grand is approved, the City would provide $320,000 and the Government of Canada another $320,000 towards the project.“We gathered feedback from the community over the last few months and tried to put as much of what they asked for into our plans. Originally, we budgeted $320,000 for the Spray Park project and after community consultation determined that the scope and the budget needed to be enhanced in order to meet the needs of the community. Applying for this additional funding means we can do even more of what the community asked for, ” stated Craig Stanley, Director of Facilities and Grounds.- Advertisement -Improvements for the park call for a “nature theme,” with two splash pads for children under five years of age, and another for older children. The updates would include a boardwalk and boulder-style seating, shade structures, an ice skating ribbon, along with a washroom and change room building. A concept drawing also calls for a small skate park, and other landscaping improvements.Another $50,000 would come from sponsorship to complete the project.  If funding is approved, construction of the project could be completed in 2016.last_img read more

first_imgJim McGuinness: masterminded Donegal’s third Ulster title four years.Donegal 0-15 Monaghan 1-09Donegal have been crowned  Ulster Senior Football champions for the third time in four years after a hard-fought three-point win over Monaghan in an historic day in Clones this afternoon. It is the first time Donegal has won both the senior and minor Ulster football titles in the same season, Declan Bonner’s side winning the minor title for the first time in eight years with a convincing win over Armagh earlier in the day. Leading by two points at half-time, Jim McGuinness’s side showed what it takes to lift the Anglo Celt Cup when, in the second period, they fought back after seeing a five point lead reduced to win gain revenge on the side that beat them in last year’s final.Karl Lacey put Donegal ahead with an excellent point in the fifth minute and Brian McHugh should have doubled the advantage two minutes later but put his effort wide from a good position. The lead was increased in the 11th minute when good play between McGee and McNaillias ended with the latter putting over an excellent point.Colm McFadden put Donegal further ahead with a free awarded for a foul on Neil McGee before Monaghan got their first score of the game in the 14th minute from a free. Another Monaghan free reduced the deficit to a single point in the 22nd minute but Donegal doubled their lead straight away when following a superb catch Neil Gallagher set up Anthony Thompson to put over the bar.A Colm McFadden free put three between the sides in the 27th minute.Keeper Paul Durcan came to Donegal’s rescue to block an almost certain goal in the 31st minute which resulted in Monaghan successfully converted the resultant 45.McNaillais doubled the advantage in Donegal’s favour on a scoreline with a point in the first minute of injury time at the end of the half. But a Monaghan free in the dying seconds leaves two between the sides at the break. McFadden and Finlay exchanged points in the opening minute of the second half before MacNiallais got his third point of the game in the 38th minute to put three between the sides on a scoreline of 0-08 to 0-05.A long range Paddy McBrearty effort in the 41st minute was followed by another sucessful McFadden free three minutes later as Donegal began to stamp their authority on the game and open up a five point lead on a scoreline of 0-10 to 0-05.However, Donegal were rocked back on their heels in the 49th minute when McGuinness powered through to fire to the back of the net to leave a single point between the sides.Ryan McHugh should have put Donegal four points five minutes later but he blazed over the bar from seven yards. Both sides exchanged points to leave the scores 0-13 to 1-07 in Donegal’s favour on the hour mark.Another brilliant long range effort from distance by McBrearty eased the Donegal nerves as he Donegal three points in front with 15 minutes remaining.Another exchange of points set up a tense last five minutes before Boyle put four points between the sides just two minutes from the end.McManus put over a consolation point for Monaghan in the dying seconds.HISTORIC DAY IN CLONES: DONEGAL CROWNED ULSTER SENIOR AND MINOR CHAMPIONS was last modified: July 21st, 2014 by johngerardShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:ClonesDaydonegalhistoriicMinorSeniortitlesUlsterlast_img read more

Top 10 world records broken at Rio Olympics

first_imgAt the world’s biggest stage, what does an Olympic athlete want? A few are determined to better their previous records while the first timers look at getting exposure. However, a few among them stand out. It would not be about medals for them but about setting records. Decorated Olympians Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps have gone about setting and breaking their own records in the previous editions of the Summer Games. (Rio Olympics: Full Coverage)There was no dearth of world records at Rio 2016 either. On 23 occasions, athletes created history, went past the ‘best ever’ mark. He set a recurve record of 700 from a total of 72 arrows. With a maximum score of 720 at sight, Woo-jin shot 52 arrows in the 10 ring and his score never dropped below nine. However, Woo-jin missed out on a medal or even a top-ten finish after losing out to Ega Agatha in the Round of 16.Katie Ledecky – Women’s 400m, 800m freestyleIn Michael Phelps Olympic swansong, America found its new swimming champion in a 19-year-old girl. Katie Ledecky, the freestyle swimmer, bagged a total of four Gold medals and a Silver. And she did it in style in her second Olympic appearance. After winning a Gold in the 800m category in London when she was only 15, Ledecky grew stronger for Rio and set two World Records. (Is Phelps the most dominant swimmer in Rio? Think Again!)advertisementOn the second day of the Games, Ledecky became the fastest woman in the world to complete the 400m freestyle final with a timing of 3.56.46. (Ten reasons behind India’s shambolic show at Rio 2016)And the reigning Olympic champion of the 800m event didn’t disappoint. She defended her title in style with another World Record time of 8.04.79. The next best swimmer in the pool on that day touched the finish wall 11.38 seconds after Ledecky did.  Wayde Van Niekerk – Men’s 400mWayde Van Niekerk smashed a 17-year-old record of American Michael Johnson to clinch Gold in the men’s 400m event.
