Podcast We Tell John Starks Why He Was The JR Smith Of

Below, Neil Paine’s notes for the discussion about Starks. Neil Paine’s quick and dirty analysis of John Starks. Welcome to this week’s episode of Hot Takedown, our podcast where the hot sports takes of the week meet the numbers that prove them right or tear them down. On this week’s show (Aug. 11, 2015), we revisit the career of an NBA cult favorite. As we were preparing topics for the show, Kate Fagan mentioned that it was John Starks’s 50th birthday this week. Starks, one of Kate’s favorites growing up, spent eight years as a member of the New York Knicks (1990-98), where he developed a reputation for fiery play, dunked over Michael Jordan and went 2-for-18 from the field (and 0-for-10 in the fourth quarter) in Game 7 of the 1994 NBA Finals. To celebrate, we look back at his career and how modern analytics would judge him. Oh, also, John Starks calls in, and we tell him how he should feel about himself. Also this week, a look at how the Blue Jays may have become the best team in baseball, and our Significant Digit of the week: Petr Cech had a rough first game for Arsenal in the Premier League, performing three standard deviations below the league average.Stream the episode by clicking the play button, or subscribe using one of the podcast clients we’ve linked to above. More: Apple Podcasts | ESPN App | RSS One of the players most similar to Starks — both statistically and in Starks’s own mind — is former Knick (and current free agent) J.R. Smith. Starks passed more, and Smith is a more efficient shooter, but the two had similar rates of usage, steals and overall effectiveness. Hot Takedown And some things we learned researching his career through the lens of advanced stats:Starks was pretty good (nearly one standard deviation better than average) in four advanced statistical categories: usage rate, assist percentage, steal percentage and turnover percentage.Despite his self-professed defensive focus and participation in one of the most suffocating defenses ever, the metrics are inconclusive when it comes to Starks’s own defense. In Box Plus/Minus, he rates below average, while Jeremias Engelmann’s emulated plus/minus ratings from the ’90s consider him one of the decade’s better defensive guards. Starks was something of a trail-blazer for the 3-point shot, which has now taken over the game. When Starks was playing his best seasons, the average NBA player attempted a 3-pointer on roughly 11 percent of his shots, while Starks took a 3 on about 40 percent of his shots (a rate that ranked seventh among his contemporaries). Fast-forward to 2015, and 27 percent of all shots are 3-pointers. If you’re a fan of our podcasts, be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts and leave a rating/review. South Caicos resort investors filing petition to get money back

first_img State of Emergency Declared for South Caicos Education Minister comments on Natl Scholars law suit Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, 04 May 2015 – Investors in the Caicos Beach Resort & Marina have eleven days to join in a lawsuit; reportedly fed up with the development which has been trying to take off since 1995. TCI News Now and the Turks and Caicos Weekly News both carry a report and Magnetic Media has since received information that confirms that there is a petition being built to be presented to the US Federal Court. Our source reported: “I have been advised to create a petition for the Florida US Attorney General signed by each investor with their personal contact information, copies of their contract, copies of deposits and wiring information. These are required to serve as factual evidence against the Developer of the Caicos Beach Resort, Patti and Brian Rahl and any other individuals who acted as the accomplices.” We’ve been told that this is a necessary step to launch criminal proceedings. Several governments are set to get the petition which closes on May 15, including the Turks & Caicos, St. Kitts & Nevis, Brazil, USA, UK, Canada and Germany. The US will be the lead prosecutor. The Rahls are Florida attorneys, who are said to have inherited the besieged property which had been waiting on the South Caicos airport development, in recent years. According to reports, it is an agreement allegedly shrouded in shady deals dating back to the 1990s and which have caught the attention of the Civil Recovery Team and the Special Investigation and Prosecution Team led by Helen Garlick. It seems this project is bust despite major announcements by the PNP Administration that the South Caicos Beach Resort would open late 2014; investors in this case are most simply put asking for their monies back which is said to be as much as $37 million. This is ongoing while ScotiaBank, last week, began auctioning the property to recoup a reported $18 million loan. Microsofts Xbox One S AllDigital Edition and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Everything

Share your voice It comes with three Microsoft gamesTo sweeten the deal, Microsoft is giving away three of its games along with the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition: the 2016 racing game Forza Horizon 3, the 2018 online multiplayer pirate game Sea of Thieves and the gaming phenomenon Minecraft. You can’t resell or share your ‘digital’ gamesOne reason people like game discs is that they can share them with friends or resell them. But you can’t do that as easily with “digital” games that are tied to your Xbox account.Incidentally, Microsoft originally planned a similar set of rules for disc games back when it first announced the Xbox One in 2013. But it eventually bowed to pressure from angry gamers, allowing them to trade and resell discs. That doesn’t change if you own a game disc, by the way. You just can’t trade or resell a game code. The Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is basically the Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass mashed togetherThat means it’ll include features of Xbox Live Gold, like being able to play against friends, download free games given away by Microsoft and get occasional discounts. And it’ll include features of Xbox Game Pass, which gives access to more than 100 games, such as Minecraft and the epic action series Gears of War.This isn’t the big new XboxMicrosoft is still working on a brand new upgraded Xbox, which is said to be launching next year. We don’t know much about it, but we’re starting to hear about what the competing device from Sony will look like. In an interview with Wired published in April, Sony discussed the chips it plans to put in its new PlayStation, also expected sometime next year.Microsoft is also working on a streaming service, currently called Project xCloud, that’ll let you play games over the internet in a way that’s similar to how we stream movies on Netflix. That service is expected to launch within the next year or so.You can watch a replay of the livestream below: Now playing: Watch this:center_img Consoles Culture Video Games 1 Microsoft is expected to announce some changes to its Xbox lineup on Tuesday. CNET Microsoft is offering a cheaper Xbox and a new game service as it prepares to release an entirely new game console likely sometime next year. The tech and gaming giant on May 7 released a cheaper version of its Xbox video game console, called the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, for $249. That reduces the suggested retail price by $50, and the way the company did this was by removing the disc drive that’s been on every Xbox since the device first released in 2001.Order at WalmartThe company also plans to offer a new service called Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which’ll combine its Xbox Live Gold social-networking service and Xbox Game Pass game download service for $14.99 per month when it’s released later this year. Here’s everything we know so far. Note that CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of products or services featured on this page. The all-digital edition is an Xbox One S without a disc driveI know, duh. The rub is Microsoft said retailers will still sell games in their stores. Only now, if you want to buy a game for the all-digital edition, you’ll be buying a game download code instead. There are rumors Microsoft is planning to offer a trade-in service in which you’ll be able trade a game disc for a download code. But so far, the company hasn’t said anything publicly.Otherwise, the device is a standard Xbox One S with effectively the same design as its more expensive $299 cousin that works with the Xbox One S. 5:18 Livestream Xbox One S: All-Digital Edition drops discslast_img read more

Ramayana revisited

first_imgThe fascinating story of the Ramayana is regaling a vastly different audience in a country far away from its native India, as National Gallery of Australia (NGA) in Canberra opened an exhibition of vintage miniature paintings that strings together a grand narrative of the ancient epic.Titled, The story of Rama: Indian Miniatures from the National Museum, New Delhi, the three-month show features 101 paintings created between the 17th and 19th centuries, and is the first major initiative under a recently-inked pact on culture between India and Australia. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’NGA Director Gerard Vaughan said that the exhibition of ‘vibrant and exquisite Indian miniature paintings is important’ for the gallery. “It forms part of our commitment to share the art and rich cultural heritage of India with all Australians,” he added, speaking about the finely-detailed paintings featuring a rich diversity of regional styles. Selected from the collection of National Museum (NM) of over 17,000 miniatures, the largest in the world, the NGA exhibition is open till August 23, and the entry is free for the public. They stand for a matured movement that colourfully visualises the spirit of the Ramayana,” he expressed.last_img read more

Chinas Huawei Unveils the Worlds Slimmest Smartphone

first_img China’s Huawei unveiled its flagship smartphone, the Ascend P6, at its first standalone launch event on Tuesday, underlining its ambitions to compete with Apple and Samsung in the top tier of mobile technology. The company says the device, at 6.18 mm thick, is the world’s slimmest. It has a 5 megapixel front-facing camera, designed for taking “selfies,” or pictures of the owner to be shared on social media networks. The company picked the launch date — 6/18 (June 18) — to tie in with the smartphone’s dimensions. The launch, at an arts venue in North London, takes a cue from Apple and Samsung, both of which have made new product announcements at high profile events for a number of years.Previously Huawei unveiled its handsets at industry trade shows like Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.Huawei, which also makes telecom networking gear, is looking to drive sales of its consumer devices, a sector in which it has only had its own brand for about three years. The company was the fourth-largest maker of smartphones in the first quarter of 2013, trailing LG Electronics and the two dominant brands Apple and Samsung, according to analyst firm Gartner. The top two sold more than 100 million units between them, while LG sold 10 million and Huawei 9 million, most of which were in its native China. The Ascend P6 uses Huawei’s customized version of Google’s Android operating system.Industry analyst Ben Wood at CCS Insight said that at the right price the Ascend P6 would attract buyers who had not considered Huawei before.”Huawei P6 is darn thin,” he tweeted. But he added that the device was not, at this stage, compatible with the high speed, next generation 4G networks, which are being rolled out across the world.Carolina Milanesi at Gartner said she would have liked to see a more original design instead of something that tries to position the brand as an alternative to Apple by going with a similar rounded metal design.Overall it shows that Huawei is working towards their goal of becoming a top brand by 2015, she said.(Editing by Jane Merriman) 2 min read Enroll Now for Free Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now This story originally appeared on Reuters This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience.
